Field works: Realities of daily life in a global economy
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning/School of Geographical Science and Planning of Sun Yat-Sen University and the Department of Environmental Sciences/Geography/Urban and Regional Studies of the University of Basel, cooperated on joint field studies on the realities of daily life which were conducted during field trips to Southern China. Besides advisers from both Universities, there were Chinese and Swiss students involved. These joint field studies were carried out in different study areas: Guangzhou’s Xiadu Urban Village, the Guangzhou Fangcun Tea Market and in rural Shixing County (farmers and students), Guangdong Province.
Groups of Swiss and Chinese students used interviews and own observations in order to gain an initial insight into the material situations and socio-spatial context of
- Small scale enterprise sector – Exemplified by the Fangcun Tea Market
- Urban villages – Exemplified by the Xiadu Urban Village, Guangzhou
- Life of the people in rural Underdeveloped areas – Exemplified by farmers of Shixia Village and students from Shixing Senior High School, Guangdong Province.
Besides the work on the economic and social science studies, cross-cultural learning was enabled. Both the Chinese and the Swiss students had the possibility to learn from each other. Especially the Swiss had a unique chance to get background information about the Chinese culture.
