India: Risk and poverty reduction

Several social science studies in this project are concerned with risk and poverty reduction, disaster mitigation and local capacity building. The sub-projects in India and Pakistan deal with the following issues.

Recovering slums

GIS-based Slum Monitoring for Mitigating Poverty, Vulnerability and Disease in Urban Slums, Bhuj 2005 - 2006.

The project first produces satellite-assisted, ground level verified GIS maps of four urban slums in the Indian city of Bhuj. Based on these maps a social science survey was carried out to identify the determinants of upward social mobility among poverty. The research questions were: How can one move people out of poverty? How do people move out of poverty?
The overall goal of this North-South research partnership between the University of Basel, Department of Geography / Urban and Regional Studies and All India Disaster Mitigation Institute, Ahmedabad, India, was to contribute to improving living conditions in urban poverty areas, minimizing and preventing risks (poor supply of sanitary housing and related health risks), giving the most vulnerable slum dwellers a voice in the issues of slum upgrading and identifying factors that assist in moving people out of urban poverty.
This research was funded by: The National Center of Competence in Research North - South Partnerships (NCCR North-South) of the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the Swiss Academy of Sciences Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries. The editors wish to thank Government Authorities in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, the District of Kutch and the City of Bhuj, particularly: Government of Gujarat Labour and Employment Department, Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority, Kutch District and Bhuj Collectorate, Bhuj Area Development Authority.
